Knife-wielding attacker in Paris ID'd as Russian native

They were detained at their residence in Paris' northern 18th district after police shot and killed the suspect in Saturday night's attack.

Interior Ministry spokesman Frederic de Lanouvelle told The Associated Press on Sunday that the man was born in the Russian republic of Chechnya in 1997 and did not have any previous convictions or arrests.

Speaking in French, his face largely obscured by a black hood and scarf, he said "infidels" fighting ISIL were to blame.

The suspect has not been named, but he reportedly was on an anti-terror watch list of suspected extremists, although he did not have a criminal record.

Hundreds of fighters from Chechnya have joined Islamist militant groups in recent years, following two bloody separatist wars against Russian-backed authorities in the 1990s and 2000s.

The Islamic State group quickly claimed responsibility for the Saturday night attack via its Aamaq news agency, saying Azimov was their "soldier" acting in response to the group's calls for supporters to target members of the USA -led anti-IS military coalition, a stock response.

Witnesses described dramatic scenes as the knifeman struck.

Investigators have not yet said when the man arrived in France.

"He then managed to isolate one of them and move down the street, trying to attack him", he continued. "I heard two, three shots and a policeman told me that the man had been overpowered", he said.

A 26-year-old woman and a man of 31 were slightly wounded.

The interior minister said the lives of the four injured people are no longer in danger. China's Xinhua news agency reported that a Chinese citizen was among the injured, citing the Chinese embassy in Paris.

A police officer cordons off the area after a knife attack in central Paris. The FSPRT watchlist alone now has almost 20,000 people, of whom about half are under active surveillance.

A 29-year-old man was killed in the attack and four people were wounded.

"Once again we learn that a terrorist was in the S file".

French media reported the victim was a 29-year-old man identified only by his first name, Ronan, who was living in the 13th district of Paris. The inclusion of this phrase in the claim suggests the attacker was remotely inspired by the IS, as opposed to dispatched by the group directly.

Yesterday's knife rampage followed a series of jihadist assaults that have now claimed 246 lives in France since 2015, including the Paris attacks of that year and the truck-ramming attack targeting Bastille Day revellers in Nice in 2016.

In 2017, French President Emmanuel Macron signed an anti-terror law in order to replace the state of emergency which was imposed after terror attacks in Paris in November 2015 that killed 139 people.

Collomb held a special security meeting Sunday to address the Paris attack.

Azimov had been flagged by French security services as a "terror risk".
