Wayne Rooney leaves Everton training complex early amid speculation on future

DC United coach Ben Olsen has confirmed the club's interest in signing Wayne Rooney but Everton boss Sam Allardyce says the player has not asked to leave.

Jose Mourinho and David Moyes offered messages of support to Wayne Rooney as England and Manchester United's record goalscorer reportedly considers a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) side DC United.

"Wayne Rooney has not asked to leave, nor has he had a confrontation with me because we are adults", said Allardyce.

"I don't get involved in transfers or negotiations".

"But in terms of the clarity of whether Wayne is leaving or staying, I'll find out a little more today when Wayne comes in for training later on".

United officials said they will not comment on the Rooney matter.

Wayne Rooney returned to Everton in the summer some 13 years after swapping royal blue for the red of Manchester United.

Rooney has scored 10 goals for Everton, his boyhood club, but none since December. "It would have to be massive for him to want to leave Everton".

The Croxteth-born player is believed to have been offered a contract until the end of the 2020 MLS season, although the United States transfer window only opens in July. Allardyce continually starting Rooney only to replace him points to the ongoing uncertainty as to his best position and use.

It depends what teams the managers put out but when I was playing for nothing on the final game of the season, I went out there and expressed myself.

"I experienced the Wayne Rooney saga in my short period of time with the England camp, and it's all: "Why is Wayne Rooney doing this, why is he doing that".

"You would need at least two players to be at the 15 mark and you need the midfielders and wide players to be in the sevens to 10s".

The suggestion is Rooney is waiting to see what happens to Allardyce in the summer - with doubt remaining over whether he will stay on as manager for next season - before deciding his next move.
